Advice to new writers

The one big thing I’ve learned about being a writer is it’s not a profession but rather it’s a lifestyle, a vocation–an I-can’t-live-without-it kind of deal like, um, chocolate or sex. I have many friends who go to their 9 to 5 jobs and then come home and put their work behind them, yet a writer could never do that. Once you commit to writing, you are in it for the long haul. That means that even when you’re not sitting at your desk churning out your next bestseller, you are daydreaming. Or at least that’s how it seems to others. Yet really you are studying your protagonist, considering how she might react in a certain situation, gathering details for your story from the world around you. Just as my heart doesn’t stop beating even when I sleep, my mind is still thinking about my book, even when I’m not writing.

So my advice to new writers is simple.

Don’t feel guilty about what you love to do and must do. Don’t worry about telling friends you can’t come out and play because you’re writing–pretty much all the time. You will have many people who don’t understand and who think you’re selfish. They will put their own fears and worries onto you because they haven’t yet scratched their own creative itch. Yes, they will get sick and tired of hearing you say the same thing over and over. Remember, hat’s their problem not yours. Your job is to write every day. Not to write on the side of your desk or in between the more important stuff. Writing is the important stuff and if you don’t get that derriere of yours in that chair–if you don’t show up–then nothing will happen. Ever. Make a promise to yourself to write as much as you can. Before work, before the kids wake up, while at the dentist’s office, on the commute to work. Many books were written by famous authors while at their place of work! You don’t need perfect conditions, you just need to commit to it and stay the course.

I believe in you. I know you can do it.

My Review

The Messenger is the first installment of The Chronicles of the Shroud series by Stefan Allen and Jerry Sword. It is a riveting book that explores the possibilities in which the second coming of Christ will ensue. The story surrounds the search for the Shroud of Turin by the several different characters and the lives of the characters that are searching for the Shroud.

The Messenger includes everything in it to make an excellent book. The story line is enthralling and keeps the reader on the edge of their set until the very last page, and then it leaves them wanting more.  There were so many unanswered questions and so many possibilities for the characters that were left open leaving the reader wondering what would follow in the next book.

The characters are well developed and show great depth; the reader feels as if they know these characters personally. The dialog and the relationships between the characters were amazing and dynamic. The history and the location are wonderfully accurate. This aspect makes the story more believable.

If you believe in miracles and trust in science this book was written for you.  This was a wonderful first book and I cannot wait for the next installment.

About the book

moring motivation

Blurb for Morning Motivation by Ashley Sauls

The thoughts that we give attention to at the beginning of the day set the tone for the remainder of the day. Why are our thoughts so important? Thoughts intermingle with our conversation and actions, resulting in a harvest we will consume (whether good or bad). We are encouraged in Philippians 4:8 to think thoughts that are true, honest, pure and lovely. Our minds can only think on these things if we apply the Word of God to our thought life. Depending on the season we are in, it might be challenging to find something good to think about. Let the wisdom of this 31 day devotional help you to establish the right foundation to help you to face every day challenges from the right perspective.

Behind the Vision: Morning Motivation

Ashley Sauls

About the Project:

Morning Motivation is a 31-day devotional that is evolving into additional inspirational books. The name of the book was derived from Psalm 30:5(a) which says that, “Weeping may endure for a season, but joy comes in the morning.” The devotional was written at a time when I was asking, “Where is the good that you promised me Lord.” From internal challenges to facing challenging people and situations, my writing was a therapeutic way to shift my thinking from what was going wrong to what was going right. Through writing this project, I wanted to inspire those who needed to refocus their thinking. I wanted this audience to know that the Word of God provides the answers to each of life’s challenges and that through application, they too can see a brighter day ahead.  The devotional includes three key features: Quotes, questions, and quiet time.

Quotes are utilized in the devotional as a tool to jump start the learning process of adjusting from detrimental thoughts to right thinking. Each quote paints a simple picture that each reader can grasp and it immediately “shifts” the viewpoint a person might have about themselves, their current circumstances, the vision God has for them, how they should approach everyday life, and much more.

Questions are used to bring the message of the devotional home. After each devotional reading, questions are designed as an invitation for readers to “dig deeper.” Wisdom only becomes valuable when applied; therefore, the questions in the devotional provide guidance to help readers to “think about what you are thinking about.”

Quiet Time:

Above all, the devotional helps readers to understand how to develop personal time in prayer. At times, quiet time is overly complicated and is painted as something that must be cumbersome. The devotional dispels this myth and is a good starting point for anyone desiring a closer relationship with the Lord by developing a personal time of fellowship with Him.

In The Sapphire Storm, Leah Tallent & Gareth Lowery took on a new case – a spider web of evil and deceit that would have them piecing together a mystery that began in an old London college; an institution that harbored secrets of a fraudulent author the world still celebrates today, and connected that man to a strange shop in Cairo…exposing the real story of a legend that all knew but no one could ever solve…

In The Hero’s Companion, Tallent & Lowery were given seven days to figure out a puzzle of mammoth proportions in order to save the father Leah dearly loved. But as the web unfolded from Athens to Cleopatra’s Mines, more secrets erupted of a personal life Leah knew nothing about, and unveiled an evil man who wants nothing more than to destroy the Tallent & Lowery team in order to bring back an army that was the worst the world ever saw…

NOW, Tallent & Lowery are headed into a castle that serves tourists every day in order to make their way through a maze to find the parent Leah never even knew existed. Every Writer Has Their Journey

Everyone asks an author how their journey began. Believe it or not, my writing ‘dream’ became a mission for me when my parents, sister and I went on vacation to Cape Cod and stayed with friends of my mom’s. This was one of those vacations where Folsom Prison would’ve seemed like paradise. The little ladies we stayed with had a house with some truly odd rules. One of which was, when their cat went “nightsie,” all lights, talking, TV – everything – had to stop so as not to disturb the kitty.

These ladies would take us into ‘town’ driving three miles an hour, blaring their horn at the pedestrians in the crosswalk (even though they had the right of way), while my sister and I were locked in the back of a station wagon with faces pressed up against the glass. (This is the first time we learned what a rat in a cage really felt like). Drivers following us must’ve thought we were puppies going to get fixed, considering the looks of pure desperation we had on our faces. And because TV and ‘normal life’ was unavailable there, I began to write. It was a fairly large book for a kid called, My Life:  A Comedy and a Tragedy.

In my freshman year of high school, a writing assignment came along from our history teacher about Nicholas II & Alexandra. I was the only one who wrote about Rasputin (who actually earned a very large role in some of the later Tallent & Lowery novels). The teacher loved it and told me to become a writer. She was so cute; four-foot-two, hair that hung to the floor, and a voice that was louder than Lady Ga Ga stuck in a blender. I will never forget her support.

I went on to write my first YA novel after I brought a stunning little girl into the world named Shelby. And one day the open road called; Shelby and I were way too tired of living in our extremely small, boring hometown and, after a very funny incident that I can’t tell you about because of word count (LOL), we fled.

I went back to my historical routes and delved into a subject that hadn’t been touched on before, concerning a woman by the name of Paulita Maxwell who was said to have been the mother of Billy the Kid’s son. Moving to New Mexico to research the project, the romance, Heart of a Legend was born.

When my father was taken away from us far too soon I began thinking about angels, and what life was like ‘up there’ versus down here. Would an angel/warrior ‘team’ be able to survive humanity, while fighting for the ones who needed them and still save each other all at the same time? The Angel Chronicles answered those questions for me.

Tallent & Lowery, however, was the big ‘dream’ the opened doors for me. I love putting puzzles together from history, and with the first book, 13, I found a way to link the NYPL with Jack the Ripper, Loch Ness, and the King Arthur legend – which was a whole lot of fun. After that…every single puzzle since has been a true thrill-ride for me as much as they are for the fans.

In the end, I always feel so privileged that these characters have become my friends…and I will always owe my entire journey to a kitty that had to go “nightsie.”

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Later, I went on to freelance writing and blogging.I began my journey into fiction writing in 2010, after joining a writing group. About Stains on the Soul

It’s her last summer before going away to college and Fiona finds herself facing more than she bargained for: A boyfriend she doesn’t want who has a strange hold over her, a friend pushing her to expand her boundaries, and a new guy named Ted whose presence is more than a distraction.

If that isn’t enough, Fiona is being haunted with horrifying nightmares of burning at the stake— nightmares so real, she feels as though she’s losing her mid.

Are they only dreams, or are they trying to warn her about this new guy she can’t help but want?

Behind the Themes: Stains on the Soul

Jamie White

As I have mentioned elsewhere, a dream sparked the beginning of Stains on the Soul. The image or a young woman burning at the stake stuck with me and I couldn’t let it go. Still there is more to the book than that and much of it came from my interest in New Age and spiritual topics. Here are a few and what inspired working them into the story…

1) Reincarnation. I’ve been interested in this topic even before I was actually exposed to it. I’m not sure where that came from, but I remember standing in a grocery store once when I was about 11 or 12 years old when the thought I’ve had another life besides this one came with such a force it shook me. I felt it down to the core of my being and it scared the daylights out of me–something I worked into the story. I began reading more about the subject years later and came across the tern “cell memory” (the idea that our bodies carry our pasts deep within our cells), I couldn’t resist playing with the idea.

2) Dreams. I’ve had some interesting experiences with them and, knowing they are windows into our subconscious, I couldn’t leave them out. Especially seeing as how they can tell the future at times–something I know first-hand.

3) Meditation. This is something I got into a little over a decade ago and I’ve had some great experiences with it. The practice or meditation is said to open up our minds and connect us to Spirit, not to mention our own intuition. As Fiona delves deeper into the dreams haunting her, she turns to meditation to help her make sense of everything.

Have you had any first-hand experiences with any of these topics? If so, what were they? What have you learned from them? I’d love to hear about it.
