My Review

The Thing With Feathers by Anne Sweazy-Kulju is a must read. This is a wonderful story that centers on Sean Marshall. The time period is 1930’s and 40’s and is set in Oregon. Sean Marshall is a good man but he and his family go through some very hard times.

The characters are well developed and the story is wonderfully crafted. All through the book you want so desperately for something good to happen to Sean and his poor family. And even though the story peers deep into the dark recesses of humanity there is a still that little bit of beauty underneath it all.

The Thing With Feathers will definitely draw you in and keep you until the very end. It will also break your heart. This wonderful but sad story will captivate you. This is a must read. I highly recommend The Thing With Feathers and give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

 

About the Author

Anne Sweazy-Kulju grew up in Southern California and moved to the Oregon coast in 1990, to open a Bed & Breakfast Inn (cross another one off the bucket list!) She is the daughter of a History teacher and granddaughter to an Irish storyteller, so it’s small wonder her genre of choice is historical fiction. Anne wrote her first novel at age 34, following a nasty car accident, but she never sought out a publisher until she was into her fifties. Perhaps she was too busy dealing blackjack, dispensing drugs, selling real estate, or doing any number of odd jobs to put food on the table. Nearly twenty years after she wrote the book, the author answered a challenge from cable TV host Glenn Beck; she gave the manuscript its first-ever edit and submitted it to a single publisher on a Friday afternoon. On Monday morning, she had a message from Tate Publishing: they’d sent a publishing contract via overnight delivery. Her debut novel, “the thing with feathers,” released September 11, 2012.

Ms. Kulju self-published a small recipe book for her B&B Inn that also provided local history, stories and facts. Later on, she contributed a series of articles to a regional travel magazine. This earned her the award for Best Editorial Contribution. Her two short stories, “Not Quite Dead,” and, “A Party Favor,” were published and later earned inclusion in the anthology for horror fiction, Agony in Black. Recently, Ms. Kulju took honors in a flash fiction contest held by The Source Magazine, for her humorous short story, “The Dog Sniffer-er”. On January 2nd, the short-short fiction piece was selected by U.K.’s Flurries of Words.com, as their featured, “FLASH FICTION AT FIVE.” Ms. Kulju and her husband of twenty-four years, live in Pacific City, Oregon, where the author is hard at fun on her latest novel, “Grog Wars.”
